Student-athletes today face challenges that are unlike those of previous generations. Experts cite social media, constant access to information, and unprecedented events such as the global pandemic as contributing factors to rising rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. According to the National Institutes of Health, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6โ€“17 experience a mental health disorder each year, with 50% of all mental illness beginning by age 14 and 75% by age 24.

The good news is that support is more available than ever, and no one has to face these challenges alone. Many nationally recognized athletes, including Simone Biles, Michael Phelps, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ronda Rousey, Kevin Love, Abby Wambach, and others, have openly shared their mental health struggles and sought help.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, reach out to a family member, teacher, coach, counselor, teammate, or friend. Problems are almost always temporary and can be overcome with support.
